project synopsis

Collaborating with a team, this project pushed us to investigate the challenges facing trades careers in recent years and devise a solution to address these issues. Through extensive research and analysis, we delved into factors contributing to the struggles within the trades sector; including shifts in labor trends, changing perceptions of skilled trades, and evolving workplace dynamics. Leveraging a design-thinking approach, we needed to identify innovative solutions that could attract new talent to trades professions or enhance the overall experience for existing tradespeople.

  • The Build Buddies project was developed by a skilled team focused on creating a meaningful educational tool. Emma Brown, our brand identity designer, developed the branding, ensuring it aligned with our research and appealed to our audience. Joseph Hermon, our UX/UI designer, crafted the website, focusing on user experience to make it accessible and engaging. I, Alyssa Scott, led the project as the manager and design researcher, identifying the core problem we aimed to address and coordinating the team's efforts to meet our deadlines efficiently. Together, our work culminated in a project that blends educational goals with thoughtful design and execution.

  • Build Buddies offers a subscription-based curriculum designed to spark interest in the trades among children, filling the educational gap left as schools move away from teaching these vital skills. Through engaging activities, videos, and worksheets, it introduces young learners to a variety of trades, showcasing them as exciting and viable career paths. By doing so, Build Buddies not only educates but also empowers the next generation to consider the trades as a lucrative and rewarding career option, long before they set their sights on other professions.

  • Build Buddies centers on exploration, inviting children to discover the diverse world of trades through hands-on activities and interactive content. Its building pillar emphasizes practical engagement, where kids create and problem-solve, gaining real-world skills. Finally, the learning aspect fosters critical thinking and perseverance, equipping the next generation with knowledge and enthusiasm for the trades as a fulfilling career path.

  • Build Buddies directly targets parents and teachers, understanding that these primary influencers are crucial in guiding children's early educational and career exposures. Parents, seeking enriching and educational experiences for their children, and teachers, looking for supplemental curriculum resources that introduce practical life skills, form the backbone of the Build Buddies community. Indirectly, the children aged 6–11 become the ultimate beneficiaries of this project, engaging with the content curated and facilitated by their guardians and educators. This two-tiered audience approach ensures that Build Buddies not only reaches those making decisions about educational content but also deeply resonates with the young minds destined to explore the world of trades.
